March 14th, 2009The Alabama Welsh was proud to represent the Welsh in the 25th Annual St Patrick’s day parade in Birmingham, AL. It was a cold, windy and rainy day but a good time was had by all. The turn out was pretty good considering the weather. Here’s a few photo’s of some of us.

HJR#309 PASSED IN ALABAMA HOUSE OF REP.
March 10th, 2009Good News! The Resolution passed in the House today, 10 March 2009. So… now comes the hard part again. We are back where we were at the end of the Legislation session last year when the Senate never voted on this so it died. We now need to get the HJR #309 put on the Senate calender and passed. I need all of you to call Senator Barron’s office and request that HJR 309 be put on the calendar and passed. His office number is (334) 242-7858. PLEASE take 5 minutes of your day and make this call. Send an email to all your friends and relatives in Alabama to ask them to do this one little thing. Thanks for all the support and help with this endeavor.
Welsh Cyclist coming to Mobile, AL
March 10th, 2009Updated News for Welsh Cycle team from David Evans a member of AWA in Mobile, AL. who is assisting the team during they’re stay.
“The Cycle Team will be passing through Mobile on March 31st. They will spend the night and be on their way east next morning.”
PRESS RELEASE
Between the 20th of March and the 4th of April, four cyclists from Wales, UK along with a support crew are going to cycle across the United States of America. Their aim is simply to raise money for a well worth charity – the Noah’s Ark Appeal in Wales which supports the Children’s Hospital.
The four – Andy Edwards, Gareth Evans, Richard Belcher and Phil Jenkins began to train back in 2007 and what started out as a good idea and a challenge is now a worth while reality. They start from Oceanside California – and will stop along the way, and the route takes in Joshua Tree, Twenty Nine Palms, Arizona, parts of the Grand Canyon (including Death Valley), Utah and onto Dulce in New Mexico. In Taos in New Mexico, they will meet up with American Welsh connections for a civic reception before travelling into Texas – Sweetwater, Leander and Satsuma. Then onto New Orleans, Louisiana and Mobile, Alabama where David and Elizabeth Evans – of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, will welcome them and accommodate and feed the weary travellers. The church is allowing the cyclists to over-night in their activities building. From there it’s on to Panama City, Live Oak and the journey ends at St Augustine Beech, Florida.
The exact details of the journey, a daily blog and a chance to donate money, can viewed on their web-site www.coast2coast-usa.org or at www.justgiving.com/coast2coast-usa . The four cyclists have been overwhelmed by peoples generosity and kindness. Andy summed it up by saying: “ We just want to say thank you. People have been so kind. In these trying times of credit crunch and financial worries, people are still more than ready to support good causes.”
The story of the journey is being made into a radio programme for BBC Radio Cymru (Welsh Radio) and being filmed by an independent media company from Wales – Telesgop.

How to contact Alabama State Representatives
March 9th, 2009The Resolution #HJR 309 was introduced into the AL House yesterday which is regarding the Prince Madoc plaque restoration on Mobile Bay Resolution. I need all of you, especially those living in Alabama, to contact the Representatives and Senators so we can get this passed through both this time before time runs out again. I believe a email, phone call or letter from an abundance of people whether Alabamians or not it should get their attention.
Here is a website you can get email addresses, telephone #’s and snail mail address for House Reps & Senators in Alabama. Let them know that you are part of the Alabama Welsh Assoc., or friends of the Alabama Welsh Assoc. which has members across the entire state. They are more likely to respond if they know your vote can hurt or help them.

It might even help if someone from the BBC contacted Birmingham New’s to get their “take” on this project by the Alabama Welsh Assoc. I can’t seem to get any interest from the local news media. Whereas the BBC News has always had interest in this situation.

What is the Left Coast Eisteddfod?
Americymru is planning to hold a major event in Portland in August 2009. The “Left Coast Eisteddfod” will be a celebration of all things Welsh and in particular of the American Welsh heritage which has so enriched the history of this nation. In order to promote and raise funds for this event, a charitable foundation – “The Meriwether Lewis Memorial Foundation” is in the process of being established. The foundation is asking for support from members and supporters of this site, and others, to achieve the following objectives:-
1. To raise funds for a talent competition modelled on the Welsh National Eisteddfod which will both provide a showcase for local talent in the various competition categories and introduce the American public to the concept of the “Eisteddfod” . It is hoped that this event will be the first of many and that future events will be held ( perhaps on an annual basis ) in other U.S. cities.
2. To raise funds for a vendors area which will provide a showcase for Welsh and Celtic businesses and craftspeople to promote their talents, goods and services, foster connections between Welsh and American businesses and craftspeople and hopefully create commercial partnerships.
3. To raise funds for a series of concerts which will feature Welsh and Welsh American performers of both traditional and contemporary music and introduce a wider audience to Welsh and Welsh-American arts and talents. Thus far a number of artists, including the following, have expressed an interest in performing at this event.
David Llewellyn
Here Be Dragons
Terry Mostyn
Nathan Penlington
Oceans Apart
Howl Griff
Bootnic
Hwyl
The above is a partial list.
Why Support A Party in Portland?
Because it will be so much more than that. As can be seen from the above list it will be a true gathering of the tribes. It is hoped that it will be the first of a new breed of Welsh event in the USA . One which showcases contemporary Wales and the Welsh American heritage in equal measure. An event which attracts widespread popular support and participation and moves Welsh heritage into the mainstream of American culture.
We are seeking contributions of all sizes. If every member of this site could contribute $10 dollars we would be well on our way to establishing a new American Welsh tradition. We are also seeking commercial sponsors and grants.
All donations welcome. Please help if you can. ( for all enquiries please email americymru@gmail.com )
Resolution for Prince Madoc Plaque
March 9th, 2009We’re back! The Prince Madoc Resolution HJR#309 has been introduced into the House. It is time for all you supporters to start slamming the Reps & Senators with emails, phone calls & letters to pass this Resolution. This will get the plaque put back on Mobile Bay instead of at the D.A.R. House. It should protect it from being removed in the future without going through the Legislature process again.
